Catedral and Giralda The "Magna Hispalensis", Seville Cathedral, is the second largest church after the Basilica in the vatican, Rome. Its origins date back to the 12th century principle Almohade mosque, of which only the Patio de los Naranjas and the Minaret exist today. The Almohade Minaret, known as the Giralda, was fitted with renaissance bells in 1568. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1401, consisting of a large open area with 5 naves and 25 chapels. The seperate Royal Chapel contains many of the works by Murillo, Zurbarn, Valds Leal and Goya among others. |

Alczares Abd Al Ramn III ordered in 913 the construction of the Alcazar, a fortified palace which later became the residence of various monarchs. Pedro I, "the cruel", (1350 to 1369) made significant additions to the palace which is one of the most important examples of Mudjar architecture in Seville. The numerous rooms, patios and halls vary in architectural styles from the Islamic to Neoclassic. The beautiful gardens and fountains are especially worth visiting. |
