click here for a big picture here's a closer shot of the same photo as above.  at the end of the roman bridge is the arch, a renaissance work.  behind the arch you can see the back facade of the mezquita/cathedral.
click here for a big picture the mezquita de cordoba was begun in 784 by abd al-rahman I, over the old christian basilica of san vicente.  it became the largest mosque in the world in the 10th century after several extensions.
click here for a big picture bishop martn fernndez de angulo (16th century) entrusted hernan ruiz the remodeling of the original work of abd al-rahman III.  the construction of the current tower began in the 16th century (over the islamic minaret) and was finished in the 17th century.
click here for a big picture this is probably the most famous view of the mosque.  this mosque is considered the most important islamic monument in the western world.  some authors call it the "eighth wonder".
click here for a big picture the first section of the mosque took seven years to build and employs materials that recall the splendor of the hellenic civilization.
click here for a big picture The mosque/cathedral suffered many extensions. The biggest of which was the one carried out under the almanzor.  the cathedral is mixture of styles. you can see greco-roman, egyptian and visigothic influences.  in the 9th century, cordoba experienced a period of expansion, and under the rule of abd al-rahman II seven more naves were added.
click here for a big picture this transept, above, is a mixture of 16th and 17th centuries styles (including hispano and flemish influences), when the catholic cathedral was constructed inside the old mosque (just in the middle of the Islamic temple).
